The Collaboration Begins

Image
This week has been interesting. It was the first week of our collaboration project where we are placed into teams to create an object out of wood together. We met as a team on Wednesday to discuss our possible designs, and we came to a few conclusions. 1.) That we wanted to create something for the school 2.) That we want to make something that can be used in some way, and not just decorative. At the end of our meeting we decided that we would all brainstorm over the few days before class to each come up with a couple of designs that we could all look at and decide on together. I was thinking that we could make something multi-purpose, as in something along the lines of those shelving units that can also be pulled down into a table and back again to save space, or a chair/table combo. We're meeting this week so hopefully I'll have more of an update in the next post.

The Final Product

Image
Alrighty, so here we are. We're ready to print the final version of our table! Just so you have a recap on what we've done so far, we've taken several circles and extruded or piped them to make both the top and the bottom segments of our table, as well as created a custom shape using rhino and imported it into grasshopper for the supports. Our render went smoothly as could be hoped, having not used grasshopper to this extent before, but I was really happy with the final outcome of the mid century modern look that I was going for! Unfortunately I forgot to take process photos of the table being printed and my failed attempts, but on our 3rd try we were able to fine tune the printer settings to accommodate the wood PLA that I decided to use for this product! Over all, I'm very happy with the final product that was achieved with this exercise, and will likely be doing more furniture in the future (hopefully in full scale).

Mid-Century Modern Table

Image
Not going to lie to you on this one, it's been a long time since I've rendered something haha! This table that I created using mostly grasshopper was inspired by mid-century modern design and materials. My mom is an interior designer and the whole time that I was designing this table I was thinking about the design aesthetic that she uses in her designs. When it comes to what makes this table different from others, I would say that the thing that makes this stand out is the circular legs, as well as the unique design used to hold the table top up. This table is primarily a decorative piece but, can be functional if needed.  As expected the function of this table is just like any other table where you would be able to use it for a variety of uses from eating, to using it for staging purposes. This table would probably be best suited in an apartment dining room, but could also be placed in a living room as a coffee table if at a smaller scale. I would also say that this table ...

Parametric Furniture Concept and Preliminary Definition

Image
I'm not going to lie, this one was and is very difficult for me. To start the understanding of what parametric meant actually clicked with me this week and now I can generally understand what I'm looking to achieve through these creations. I started this by just drawing an organic shape, nothing special, but as I continued to experiment with lines I started to see a piece of furniture starting to form.  After the drawing was done I saw that the side supports of the table as well as the rings for the base could have the amount manipulated. When trying to create this shape, I feel like I got pretty close to the initial design although I wasn't able to get this to be parametric. I definitely like the shape and the design, but the struggle will most likely be the side supports. This next image is what I ended up with after hours of trial and error in order to create this design. Obviously I have a long way to go, but I hope with some research and possibly asking my peers, that ...

Is it pronounced GIF or JIF?

This week has been a bit trickier for me to be honest. Grasshopper has been quite the learning curve for me. I started this week designing a custom table and messing around with the leg thickness and length primarily. It wasn't too difficult, but I fount that I kept running into the issue where the legs would continue to overlap. I eventually just decided to make it so that the legs wouldn't get so large and limited their size. After the table, I decided to take a spin off the segmented table that Bryan made and more points & sliders to influence the shape of the overall design. My struggle with this wasn't designing the shape, but actually in animating it. I spent quite a while trying to remember how to make the animation go in reverse, but alas couldn't figure it out on my own. After some very useful advice I was able to figure it out, but wasn't able to figure out how to perfect it. In the end I'm happy with what I created regardless of it's flaws, an...

My First Definition

Image
It was definitely interesting using grasshopper for the first time seeing as there's a lot to take in. The instructional videos were pretty straight forward which was nice, and I didn't really run into any complications with following along. The videos and demonstrations sparked several ideas on making some intriguing organic shapes although I have not been able to dedicate the time to be able to fully explore them. Using what I've been taught through these videos, along with what I believe I will be learning in the near future, I want to render some organic iceberg shapes that I can play with and render. Just an idea though. After trying to explore some shapes on my own the only complication I ran into was trying to remember how to join polysurfaces together to make a complete form.
